From ‘Mad Men’s’ sexy nipped-in waists and pencil skirts to the gorgeous rockabilly style of singer Imelda May, it seems our love affair with vintage fashion knows no ends.
An Athy couple has started an online store, Rockfrocks.com, to supply Irish fashionistas with something just a little bit different for special events.
Castledermot woman Catherine Dooley, a marketing graduate, is a fan of the vintage rockabilly look, but said she found it hard to source dresses and accessories in Ireland. With the help of her other half, Athy native Colm Holligan, who looks after the technical side of the website, she decided to source and sell such garments online herself.
“You don’t have to be into that scene, but many girls are looking for something different to wear to a wedding or 21st. They get fed up of wearing the same high-street brands you could see on some other girl,” she said. “I’ve started wearing the dresses, and you get loads of compliments - you can wear them any time.”
The pair started the business from home a couple of weeks ago, and have already taken orders from as far afield as Dublin and Limerick.
Their most popular item so far is a vintage party dress with side bow detail.
And while the range of stock so far is small, with just 11 beautiful vintage dresses, they plan to expand into oaccessories, shoes and petticoats in the near future.
The couple has no plans to open a ‘bricks and mortar’ shop in the immediate future, though Catherine laughs that their Athy home is now “cluttered” with vintage dresses, but may look at opening a pop-up boutique should the opportunity arise.
Leinster Leader readers with an interest in vintage fashion can avail of a special 10 percent discount off all orders placed with new Kildare-based fashion website, www.rockfrocks.com.
