A woman who lost a whopping seven stone and who encouraged her family to lose 13 stone in just 18 months is bringing her know how to Newbridge.
Joyce Kearney, who lives outside Athy, changed her life and those of her nearest and dearest , when she joined Slimming World in the new year weighing 21 stone.
In 2009 Joyce had to retire from her job that she loved as a Health Care Assistant due to the dreadful strain that obesity put on her knees and joints
“I suffered with arthritis in my knees and needed two knee replacements,” said Joyce. “I couldn’t walk with the weight and I got clots in my lungs so I decided to go to Slimming World in Athy. I now feel a million dollars.”
Joyce admits walking through that door on the first night she felt so daunted and self-conscious but she was met with a warm welcome at the door.
“I tried every diet under the sun,” she said. “I got shakes, cabbage juice, they all worked but when I started eating again the weight went back on.”
Joyce lost an impressive 13 and a half pounds at Slimming World in her first week and after that she was committed to the programme so much so that she encouraged her family to join her.
“My husband James has lost four stone, my daughter Josephine four and half and my son Jason six and a half. We are like a new family - it is hard to believe. We used to eat deep fat fried food and use lots of sauces now we use herbs and spices and no more jars or processed foods.”
Joyce is so passionate about all Slimming World has to offer she has now become a consultant herself and opened her own group in Moorefield GAA Club House who meet every Wednesday at 7.30pm.
