A group of 13 beaver scouts in Naas recently received their Beaver Scout Chief Scout Award.

There are two beaver scout sections in the 4th Kildare Naas Scout Group, the wood colony and the tir na nOg colony. Beaver scouts are aged from six to nine years old.

They take part in a programme of activities with the emphasis on fun.

The Beaver Scout programme encourages the physical, intellectual, character, emotional, social and spiritual development of each child.

This is achieved around activities, events, personal challenges and adventure skills. They had to meet certain criteria for the award, including special interest badges under the headings of skills, physical, community and environment. Activities undertaken included cooking, wood turning, swimming, sports and climbing mountains.

For the community and environment badges they helped the Naas Tidy Towns and also helped the Down Syndrome organisation clean up the gardens at their premises. They further undertook a 10k hike in Donadea Wood and had a campout
