Leixlip United Soccer Trials

Leixlip United Soccer Club is holding trials for their under 10 and under 11 schoolboy teams at the Amenities Centre at 6pm on June 5. The Soccer Club has a number of teams of varying standards in each of these age groups. The trials are for young players who are of a high standard and would be able to play in the first teams in each group. Both of these teams play in the top league of the Dublin District Schoolboy League. Trials for other teams, some suitable for beginners, will take place later in the year.

Parish Cell Group meetings

The parish cell groups will meet on June 11, 12, and 13. There will be a combined Cell meeting in the Parish Centre on June 26. Meetings are held on Mondays 8pm (young adult group), Tuesdays 8pm and 8.30pm and Wednesdays 10am and 11am. July and ~August meetings will be held in the Parish Centre.

At the invitation of the Leixlip Parish Cell Groups, the well-known healer Eddie Stones will visit Leixlip on June 8. His visit will begin the Church of Our Lady’s Nativity at 7pm.

Tragic Leixlip connection

Thomas Clancy, Our Lady’s Nativity Parish Council, will give an illustrated talk on ‘The Eucharistic Congress of 1932 and the tragic Leixlip Connection’. An enormous crowd gathered in the Phoenix Park for the Congress. As some returned to their homes in Co. Offaly, the only fatalities of the event took place in the early hours in Leixlip.

Father’s Day Crafts Workshop

Join Sheila and Pam in the Library on Friday June 15 at 3.15pm to make something special for your Dad! This workshop is suitable for 5-7 year olds. All materials are supplied. Places are limited so booking is essential.

World Knit in Public Day

Bring along your knitting and knit with us at the Library on Wednesday June 13 from 10.30am - 4pm. Our knitters have been busy and will display all their craft on the day. Our knitters are intergenerational; the art is being passed to the next generation in friendly and convivial surroundings. Organise your group to show off their craft or to learn new skills on the day. Refreshments will be served.

The Leixlip Library Knitting Club - Purls of Wisdom - meets every Tuesday morning from 11am – 12.30pm. Knitters of all abilities including beginners are welcome. Come and share your skills and patterns and stay for a cuppa and a chat.

Rainbow support

Rainbows is a parish support programme for children grieving through death/separation/divorce or any other traumatic experience in their lives. The Rainbow programme has been running successfully in Leixlip for the past six years. At the moment the group needs more volunteer Facilitators to continue with this programme. Sensory Processing Disorder

There will be a lecture on the subject of Sensory Processing Disorder in the Library at 7pm on June 14. Dorothy Armstrong, Occupational Therapist, will cover issues such as: what is Sensory Processing Disorder and suggest strategies to help children with this problem. There will also be an introduction to items in the Toys, Technology, and Training collection in the libraries that are of benefit to these children.

Coffee Morning for MS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common neurological condition in Ireland affecting some 7000 people. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland is holding a Coffee Morning on Wednesday May 30 starting at 10am in Our Lady’s Parish Centre to mark World MS Day, and help raise awareness of the condition.

Open air Mass

To mark the beginning of the Eucharistic Congress 2012 and the Feast of Corpus Christi, the 12.15p.m. Mass on Sunday June 10 will be celebrated in the open air at the main door of the Church (weather permitting). The First Communion Children will have a special place as it is also the final Mass in the Do This in Memory First Communion Programme.

After Mass in the Parish Centre, there will be an exhibition of artwork from the Primary Schools, the theme of which is the Eucharistic Congress and the results of the art competition will also be announced. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Date change for Cemetery Sunday

Because the Eucharistic Congress which will be taking place from June 10-17, Cemetery Sunday has now been transferred to Sunday June 24 at 3pm in Confey Cemetery.

Cell group meetings

Patchwork for beginners

Kildare Library and Arts Service has organised an exciting programme of free workshops and performances in libraries throughout the county during Bealtaine for older citizens. On Wednesday May 30, from 11am-1pm, Sheila Travers will demonstrate for beginners how to work with patchwork. All materials will be provided.

Making friends with Asperger’s

On Thursday May 31 at 7pm in Leixlip library, Dorothy Armstrong will host an evening focused on helping children and teens with Asperger’s Syndrome to make friends. The presentation is aimed at parents, teachers and those who work with this group of young people. It will cover issues such as: Understanding developmental stages in relation to forming friendships, exploring the obstacles that can be faced by these children/teens when making friends and methods for enabling friendship development

Dorothy is an Occupational Therapist with a private practice in Maynooth. She has both a degree and a Masters and is currently studying towards a PhD in the area of dyspraxia. She is also a lecturer in occupational therapy at the National University of Galway. The lecture is free of charge and open to everyone.

Autism support

The Kildare Support Group for parents and carers of those with autism meets in the Riverforest Hotel on the last Wednesday of each month at 8.30pm. For information, please come along to a meeting or call John at 087-2621309.

NUIM Barnhall Rugby awards

The 2011-2012 season Youth Awards Night will be held in NUIM Barnhall Rugby Club on Friday evening June 1 at 7.30pm.
