‘Newbridge 200’ Festival seeks local talent
Are you in a band, choir, dance, or drama group or have a performing group based in Kildare and looking for a stage to showcase your talent? If so the Newbridge 200 festival might be the platform for you.
The Newbridge 200 Festival, which takes place from 6 to 16 September this year, is looking for local talent from County Kildare to participate in the bicentennial celebrations of the town. This is a great opportunity to showcase the considerable local talent of the town and the county and give local groups an audience for those talents. The stage will run for the two weekends of the festival and will, it is expected, provide an eclectic schedule of entertainment free to the public. Interested individuals and groups wishing to participate in the festival can register on the festival’s website, where further information. www.newbridge200.com.
St Conleth’s Community Games activity
Community Games activity in St.Conleth area has been running at a very high level in recent weeks with Swimming, Gymnastics, and Leinster team events.
The County Swimming turned out to be a great success for the area with 3 Gold medals and qualifiers for the All Ireland Finals in August. The Gold medals came from Mathew Gardiner in the Boys U12 Freestyle who was very impressive, Mark Glynn in the Boys U14 Freestyle and Aoibheann Conlan in the Girls U16 Freestyle. In addition there was a Bronze medal for Beth Gardiner in the Girls U10 Freestyle and a 4th place medal for Aaron Kennedy in Boys U12 Breaststroke.
This was indeed a great return for the St. Conleth’s winners and congratulations to all competitors and parents.
The County Gymnastics were held in Scoil Mhuire, Ballymany and here Patrick McGrath was 1st in the Boys U8 and will now represent Kildare in the All Irelands. Caelan Power took home a Silver medal in the U10 section and was only pipped.

Kids reading challenge
Newbridge Library is holding a reading challenge this summer-loads of fun and games for children. Visit the Story Lab website and come down to the library to collect your pack free. www.story-lab.org.uk . Story Lab is an amazing hi-tech place where children can invent and swap stories, and have plenty of fun. Children who sign up to Story Lab receive their own 3D lab model where they can keep track of their progress. As they read they collect stickers to give them a real sense of achievement as they work their way through the stages.
Good to see that at long last the library is finally getting a fresh coat of paint which will enhance its appearance and give it the finished look it has lacked.
The sterling efforts of the Tidy Towns Committee and the wonderful voluntary work being done by the many local residents associations of the town’s estates in attempting to present our town in the best possible light, is being spoilt by the proverbial ‘Halfpenny worth of tar!’
What would it cost to pull the weeds from the footpaths on our main street and match the grass cutting of public areas with that being done by private interests?
And finally, the byelaws must be implemented to ensure that business premises, in particular, fast food outlets do a spot check outside their premises every hour and pick up discarded litter emanating from their customers.

Flanagan’s Bar Newbridge welcomes Barry Gruff
The ‘Barry Gruff Presents’ series returns to Flanagan’s Bar, Newbridge on Saturday, June 30. The series has already witnessed special performances from some of Ireland’s brightest emerging talents.
The next show is set to be no different with the very talented Trap Door, Nathan Conway, Ciaran Lenehan all playing live, followed by DJ sets till 2am from Cormac Brady (Super Extra Bonus Party) and Barry Gruff. Dublin trio Trap Door have been getting rave reviews for their live shows and combine a rich mix of punk, folk, ska, and hip-hop with insightful flowing and streetwise lyrics.
In a similar approach of one Jamie T, Trap Door take the listener rumbustuous rattle through urban life, something borne out on their critically acclaimed debut EP, Lata Town.
With songs of lyrical depth, plenty of youthful lairiness and rebelliousness; Trap Door are a band to contend with. Accompanying them on the bill are Nathan Conway and Ciaran Lenehan. Since releasing his first album with The Bottlestoppers in 2011, Nathan Conway has been back in the studio developing an ever more sophisticated Soul and Country Music sound.
Meanwhile Dublin folk rocker Ciaran Lenehan has played with the likes of Damien Dempsey, Frank Turner and Wallis Bird, brings his engaging and eloquent songs to Newbridge once again.
