GAA Cul Camp
There is another reminder of the GAA Cul Camp which is taking place in Blessington GAA Grounds from Monday July 9 - Friday 13. Time is running out for children to book a place. Total cost for the camp is €55 and a €5 discount voucher is available on Kelloggs Packs.
This is always a very enjoyable week for those children taking part. Qualified Coaches are on hand to show them the various skills of the game. If there is anyone out there who is interested in any kind of writing such as songs, poems, short stories etc then now is your chance to find out more about how to go about it. The Scribblers, Wafflers and Writers meet up every Wednesday afternoon at 3.30pm in Blessington Library. All are most welcome to come along and join in.
Blessington Golf Society held their Annual Presidents Day Outing on Sunday June 10 In Druids Glen Golf Course in which they had fifty-four golfers competing for one of the major prizes in the society which was won again by Bernard Higgins with 35pts playing off H/c of 8.
The weather and the condition of the course were excellent on the day with the presentation of the prizes in Hennessys lounge later that night where the President Frank O Neill and Captain Pat Clarke presented the winner’s with a fantastic selection of prizes.
The Captain congratulated the panel of players that is representing the society in this Year’s Daily Star competition who recently beat “The Kegs” from Baltinglass to advance to the third round which will be played on June 23 in Baltinglass at 2pm.
There is a reminder to all the members that the societies book which is being complied at present to mark the 25th Anniversary of the society is now being edited any will be launched as planed at the Dinner Dance on Saturday October 25 in the Avon Ri Blessington. Tickets for same will be on sale from the committee in due course as numbers will be limited members are advised to reserve there tickets from the any member of the committee asap.
Lacken national school
It has been a wonderful year for Lacken National School having almost completed their first full school year in their beautiful new building and under the guidance of principal Caroline Finan and her team of teachers the school continuous to flourish and grow.
The new state of the art school building that opened in January of 2011 now also offers an onsite Naionra Pre-School facility which is ECCE grant aided. This service runs from 9am – 5pm in line with the school calendar and parents can avail of flexible hours. In the last year the school has enjoyed countless successes not only in Academia but also in Sport, Art, Music & Drama.
The Autumn/ Winter Term saw many successes in Cross Country and GAA whilst there were numerous winning Art Competition entries including a special mention from Hector on 2FM’s Breakfast Show for the Senior Classes entry for the ‘Dress Up For Bernados’ Art Competition.
In December the children participated once again in the Hallelujah Concert in the RDS.
One of the biggest highlights of Spring Term was the ‘Food Glorious Food Show’ which was co-hosted in The Moat Theatre Naas by both Celebrity Chef Chris Sandford and TV presenter Olive Geoghegan. The show was Chris Sanford’s brainchild and as part of a healthy eating initiative the children from the school were encouraged to submit their favourite healthy recipes. Some of the children helped Chris cook on stage and throughout the night parents and friend were entertained with songs and poetry performed by the children and also had a chance to sample the food. The children’s recipes were also collated into a beautiful recipe book.
On Sunday June 10 members and leaders of Blessington Youth Musical & Dramatic Society travelled to Baltinglass Hospital to entertain the patients with an excerpt from their recent sell-out performance of ‘The King and I.
A most enjoyable day was had by all who were present on the day. The leaders of BYMDS would like to thank all the members for their impeccable behaviour and performance on the day and a special thanks to Josie and Staff at Baltinglass Hospital for making everyone so welcome.
They look forward to returning next year with a new production.
Pitch and putt
Poulaphouca pitch and putt club held the Tom and Joe Memorial recently with the overall winner being Robert Carroll. Other prize winners were Graham Curran, Billy Hamilton and Larry Walsh. The competition commemorates two former members who died a few years ago.
Playing conditions were excellent with the course once again in very good order. Next up for members will be the Club Matchplay which will be played during this week.
Gaelic for mothers
Blessington Ladies are now recruiting for their brand new Ladies GAA Team. This is aimed at women and mothers who never played Gaelic Football or may not have played for a long time to call up to Blessington GAA pitch this Wednesday 6.30-7.30pm where with the help of coaches they can start playing Gaelic Football.
It will be one session every week for 1 hour. It will introduce women to the basic skills of Ladies Gaelic Football through fun games and drills. An evening at the Races in Aid of KARE takes place at the Curragh Race Course on Saturday July 21. Tickets are priced at €15 and €10 from every ticket sold in advance goes directly to KARE to help them to continue to do the wonderful work they carry out all across Kildare, East Offaly and West Wicklow.

There is a reminder to all parishioners about upcoming Cemetery Masses in the Parish. Mass will be celebrated in Templeboden Cemetery Lacken on Sunday July 29, Baltyboys Cemetery on Sunday August 26 and Manor Kilbride Cemetery on Sunday September 9.
Parishioners are asked to notify relatives and friends living outside the area in plenty of time in case they may wish to attend.
