Rathangan Connections To Titanic
Rathangan Local History Group had a very topical lecture by James Durney on the Co Kildare connections to the Titanic Disaster. Their was held on Thursday night last April 12th
100 years to the day that the Titanic sailed from Queenstown now Cobh, Cork. James outlined a lot of interesting and some quirky associations with Co Kildare including a story
of a man by the name of Pomeroy Colley from Carbury who was related to Edmund Spencer of 1798 fame, who was heroic in helping people off the ship and lost his own life.
Following his death a number of young ladies claimed to have been engaged to him. Also among the causalities was a Fitzpatrick from Lullymore who has lots of relatives still
living in Rathangan. The History Group’s next meeting will be on Thursday May 10th at 8pm in the Library.
Bluebells are early
Every Spring we encourage people to avail of the free glimpse of heaven, that is a walk in Kilnthomas Wood at Bluebell time. This year everything is a month early so the
Bluebells which normally bloom in May are now in full bloom, so get and enjoy.
Dermot’s tip
Our gardening Guru Dermot Conlon’s tip is for people who do not like the work of planting flower plants every Spring, is to avail of the great value at present in rose bushes, which
have never been as cheap. For as little as €3 to €6 or less,if you buy five or six, you can have years of beautiful roses, for the price of a couple packets of cigs.
