Summertime art exhibition

The Abbey Art Group is holding its “Summertime” Art Exhibition in the Slip Hall at Castletown Gates in Celbridge on Friday May 18 from 8 - 9.30pm. The exhibition is being held in conjunction with Christchurch Fundraising. The exhibition continues 10 - 5pm on Saturday and Sunday and there will also be plants and cakes too for sale. Some artists from the group of approx. 30 members will be giving demonstrations over the weekend. There will be around. 70 paintings for sale. These can range from as little as E60 - E200. All artists are local and use oils, acrylics and watercolours, with subject matter ranging from local scenes to still life and botanical art.

Charity Road Race

The Salesian Past Pupils’ Union of the Salesian College Celbridge is currently organising a Road Race for Saturday, May 19. The Road Race will start and finish in the Salesian College grounds on the Maynooth Road and will take the route of the Fr. Archer Memorial Race.

This year the Road Race will be a joint fundraiser for the both the ACRE Project and Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.

The Road Race affords the new Acre Project with an ideal opportunity to establish a Past Pupil network of support. However, the race is not confined just to Past Pupils. All who wish to join in and run or jog in support of these two great charities are more than welcome.

Bealtaine events at Castletown

To celebrate Bealtaine, Senior Citizens are welcome to enjoy a free tour of Castletown House on any Friday’s throughout May and also the “Free Friday on Film events”. On Friday May 18 the film is “All for Love”. This will be shown in the Stable Wing Hunting Room at 2.30pm. This film is of local interest as parts of it were shot in Castletown House and grounds. The Courtyard Café at Castletown is also offering Senior Citizens a 10% discount to use on the date of their visit (18th or 25th May only.) Discount is offered to those who partake in our Bealtaine Events (Tour and/or Film). Discount will only be applied upon presenting a valid ticket issued that day for the tour and/or film.

May market

This year’s Castletown Markets and Craft Fairs will take place in the recently restored Stable Wing and Courtyard on the last Sunday of the month between May and October. The first market will open for business on Sunday May 27 from 11am-5pm

Volunteer projects

As part of National Week of Volunteering, St. John of God Kildare Services are inviting Volunteers to take part in gardening and painting projects on Wednesday 16th May at St. Raphael’s, commencing at 9.30am. Individuals and organisations will be made very welcome. Volunteers will have an opportunity to meet other volunteers and to experience at first hand the services on offer at St. Raphael’s.

Summer camps for kids

The Sports Centre at the Mill Community Centre is offering three summer camps for children this year during July and August. The dates are July 9-13, July 23-27 and August 13-17. The camps run from 10am - 2.30pm from Monday to Friday inclusive.

These camps are designed as camp a non-competitive and enjoyable time for your child. Some of the many activities on offer are Soccer, Karate, Tennis, Rounders, Quiz and Arts and Crafts.

These camps are indoors so our Irish Summer weather does not affect them. Activities are organised by qualified sports/leisure graduates and a qualified Arts and Crafts Teacher.

Kids are requested to bring suitable clothing (old clothes for Arts and Crafts) and a nutritional lunch. The fee is only E50 per child per week.

Journey in Song

The Celbridge and Straffan Gospel Choir and guests will be presenting a concert called “Our journey in Song” on Friday May 18 at 8.30pm in St Patrick’s Church in Celbridge. Tickets at E5 or E10 for a family of four, will be on sale after Saturday and Sunday masses or at the church door on the night. This event is a fundraiser for Mark Kenneally from Beatty Park who will be representing Ireland in the Marathon at the London Olympics 2012.Along with official funding Mark needs to raise 15,000 just to cover essential expenses in his Olympic journey.

Junior chefs

The Academy for Junior Chefs at The Village at Lyons Estate, near Celbridge, will be running courses this July. Programmes include: Junior Chef - Super Foods for Super Heroes, for 8 - 12 year olds and Pro Chef - Feel Good Foods, for 13 - 18 year olds. Price €145 (sibling discounts available). Boxing Club

The Celbridge Boxing Club meets on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6-9.30pm and on Sundays from 1-3pm in the Mill Community Centre, Beginners from 10 year and upwards are always welcome. Contact John O’Neill at 086-8744070 for more information.

Badminton at the Mill

If you enjoy this fun game, why not book a court at the Mill Sports Centre. There are many slots available during the week for the very reasonable fee of E10. Racquets and shuttles are available for hire. This game is ideal for families, teenagers, couples and friends and is easy to learn and play. Call the manager at 6288556.

Library re-opening

Following a brief closure for building maintenance, the Community Library will re-open on Wednesday May 16 at 2 p.m.

Picture this

The Celbridge Camera Club meets every Monday night at 8pm at the Slip Hall. The activities vary from talks, demonstrations, competitions and workshops. During the summer months, the Club meets at 7:30pm at the Castletown Gates and visits a location to take photographs – typically the venue is decided the previous week and varies from Mullingar to Temple Bar to Dun Laoghaire.
