Alzheimer’s Society needs a venue
The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland, which aims to provide day care and home care, is in danger of having to reduce its Monasterevin day services to a day or two weekly due to lack of funds. The Monasterevin service was set up a decade ago as the only dementia specific service in the county, with Sr. Peig Rice as founder.
Professional care workers offer a dementia-specific day care service in a warm, welcoming environment giving true specialist care to people with dementia. The focus of the centre is the provision of care in an environment where people with dementia feel comfortable and are stimulated and where their individual needs are met as far as possible.
An important feature of the service is that it provides activities outside the home, giving stimulation and care to the person and a break for the primary carer. The day includes a hot lunch and many centres provide transport to and from the service.
The group believes that a more central location which would open five days a week would be more cost effective and serve a bigger catchment area. They believe Newbridge would offer the ideal venue. WIth over 1,000 people in the county diagnosed with Alzheimers, and many more undiagnosed, the proposed new venue is vital. Contact Mary on 059 8632906.
