The diversion from the Athy road is being described by locals as traffic chaos. The current road-works on the old N78 Kilcullen to Athy road are causing sections of the road to be closed to traffic whilst the work is being carried out. This week the Hacklow cross area has been closed meaning that all traffic coming from Athy to Kilcullen is being diverted through Calverstown and over to the old Carlow road and traffic coming from Kilcullen for Ballyshannon, Calverstown etc. is being sent down the old Carlow road.
As these roads are not designed for large trucks and lorries and the volume of traffic on these windy roads is now increased tenfold it’s causing delays, stress as motorists get lost on the back roads and adding considerable time to people’s journeys.
There appears little that can be done whilst the road-works are going on, so take care, don’t speed on these minor roads – you never know what’s round the corner and allow a little extra time for your journey.
