The AAI Leinster Relays were held on Sunday 27 May in Tullamore Harriers. Newbridge had two teams competing, girls u12 and boys u14. The girls’ u12 qualified from their heat and in a very close finish in the final they just missed out on a medal position finishing in 5th place. The boy’s u14 was a straight final and the Newbridge team of Tom Cole, Kevin Kyne, Jack Fitzgerald, and Luke Morris powered home with a 20m margin and a new Leinster record to take the Leinster title. They now go on to the All Ireland finals which will be held on 29 July in Tullamore.
A welcome oasis
This newly opened cafe in George’s street, ‘The Desert Rose’ is a welcome addition to the town’s amenities. Apart from the fact that it serves seriously good coffee and lovely healthy food options, it is good to see new business premises opening - a change from the depressing recent trends. George’s Street, potentially one of the most attractive locations in the town has suffered its fair share under the downturn, along with Eyre Street, both of which house some of the longest established business in Newbridge. Now if only the Courthouse was reinstated!
Newbridge in Bloom and the Lilywhites
Most of us agree that if resilience, dedication, hard work and an unflappable spirit in the face of adversity and downright bad luck count for anything ,then the Lilywhites footballers are overdue a championship title. It would be a welcome boost to the town and county if this is the year when they reach full bloom. Those who attended the launch of ‘Newbridge in Bloom’ by the Tidy Towns Committee at Newbridge Credit Union last week shared the exact same sentiment as the followers of the Lilywhites, when they evidenced the enormous effort of a few dedicated volunteers intent on bringing success and honour to their town and its people despite the thoughtlessness and selfish behaviour of a minority to thwart their efforts.
Thanks to the hard work of this small group the town looks magnificent and we all hope they will receive their just rewards when the judges visit Newbridge over the summer. In the meantime, if you are passing by and see a discarded paper bag, can, or other debris in your path, do your bit, pick it up, and bin it. Together is feidir linn.
