Fianna Fáil April meeting report
The April meeting of the Frank English Fianna Fáil Cumann held recently, discussed quite a number of matters of local interest. The Cumann whose membership includes quite a number of individuals involved in pre-school and primary education as well as members with young children, welcomed Cllr. Mark Dalton’s and Cllr. John Lawler’s motion at the April meeting of Athy Town Council, that the council apply for funding from the recently announced Sports Capital Grants Scheme to improve the playground facilities in the People’s Park. This facility is the only free facility for young families in Athy and it should be brought up to the standard of similar facilities in surrounding towns.
Dragon boat challenge
Will your club or friends take the challenge?
For last June’s Dragon Boat competition in Carlow a group of Athy ladies formed the Barrow Line Babes Team. After three heats they qualified for the semi finals and unfortunately missed the final by 1.6 seconds. After having a fun day at this event they decided to enter the next event. Here they were all supported by partners and boyfriends who after seeing the event in Carlow wanted to join in the fun and accused the ladies of being sexist. The ladies bowed under pressure but held the majority of the seats and hence the name change from Babes to Bandits.
The next event was in September on the Grand Canal Docks where twenty teams attended. Here the Barrow Line Bandits proved themselves invincible, winning all three heats.
The opposition in the semi finals looked stronger and worried Athy, but they had no reason to worry as from the start all they saw of Athy was their backs. The finals were no different as half way down the course Athy put their backs into it and put a boats length between them and the nearest of the opposition. This was a great success for Athy as only six of the team had ever experienced water sports before. If you are interested in a new challenge all you need to test your strength and endurance against the mighty Bandits is 17 team members and to be available on the 6th of May, River Barrow, Emily Square, Athy. If you are interested in taking part email email@example.com or call 059 916 1685/ 085 7422902.
