Diary of a Legal Eagle

New York.

New York.

The Holy Family Secondary School, Newbridge, Senior Law team is counting down the days until we embark on our journey to the Empire Mock trials in New York in October.

Our team consists of twelve Fifth Year HFSS pupils: Roisin O’ Donnell, Erin Mcdonald, Beth Devlin, Shannon Clausen, Katie Clooney-Gainey, Elena Walsh, Emma Costello, Karley Keane, Aine Foley, Roisin Murphy and Clodagh Cummins.

We are currently battling with fundraising and analysing every aspect of the case. We’re hugely grateful to so many who have helped us along the way.

We are developing our witness and attorney characters in the trial and trying to brush up on our American law. It’s a much more adversarial legal debate than we are used to and there is a lot of case law to absorb and interpret to our argument.

In the case, there are eight witnesses. We are vigorously going through the affidavits of each witness trying to match timelines and develop the characters.

We’re also seeking out the flaws that will hopefully help us clinch the winning edge in cross-examination.

We have just three weeks before we go to trial in the Brooklyn District Courthouse.

It is a great opportunity as we attempt to get a grasp and understand American law.

Our law coaches, Sarah Allen, Eimear O’Brien, Deirdre O’Callaghan and Roisin Prior are working with our attorneys to get them into the mindset of an American attorney, teaching them objections and helping them to undertake the role of the attorney.

We are watching videos of previous trials enabling us to understand how we should act in the courthouse and prepare us for what we will be facing in New York.

- Laura O’Brien, HFSS Attorney
