NATIONAL Carers award winner Peter Riordan from Naas was among family carers from across the country who attended a special reception at Aras an Uachtarain, hosted by President Higgins, recently.
The special invitation was extended to celebrate the Carers Association 25th anniversary. The Carers Association has been providing vital supports and services to family carers across the country as well as lobbying for their rights and entitlements. 2012 will see the long awaited publishing of a National Carers Strategy which is something that the association and family carers have lobbied Government on for many years.
President Higgins and wife Sabina warmly welcomed Peter and some 120 other carers to the Aras and President Higgins was presented with a specially commissioned anniversary candle after making a wonderful and heartfelt speech.
President Higgins also welcomed the commencement of National Carers Week in his speech. Carers Week takes place from Monday 18 – Sunday 24 June with a host of events taking place across the country. For further details on events near you please call the Carers Association Careline 1800 24 07 24 or visit www.carersweek.ie.
Apart from winning the top national carers award most recently, Peter also won the County Kildare award and went forward to the national event having won the provincial award. The 81-year-old currently cares for his sons Bernard (51) who was left brain-damaged and in a wheelchair after a car accident in 1978, and Ronan (36) who has Downs Syndrome.
