SCOIL NAOMH LORCAIN, LEVITSTOWN SCHOOL NEWS

Ms Sandra Byrne, Principal sends us her school news “In Scoil Naomh Lorcáin, we would like to say thank you to all who took part in our annual Halloween Hike fundraiser. A special word of appreciation to the Parents who accompanied us on our walk and helped to monitor the oncoming traffic. So far we have raised €633. This money will go straight to good use in providing essential stationery for the school. The children will also benefit directly as a special workshop has been booked for them with Songschool through the Kildare Arts in Education scheme. Peter Baxter from Songschool will visit on the 6th of December bringing his musical instruments, he will work for an hour and a half with each class group focusing on music making. The school has been fortunate to be included in the Kildare County Council’s ‘If I had an artist for a Day..’ Arts in Education Programme 2012. We are looking forward to welcoming Peter and to hearing lots of music!

Following our success last year in the Discovery Primary Science Awards, we will enter again this year. Science Week will be celebrated from the 11th-18th of November 2012. Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 1st class will attend a Junior Science Week Event with a team of scientists from the Bog of Allen, this will take place in Athy Library on November the 16th.

5th and 6th class will be taking part in ‘I’m a Scientist, Get me out of Here!’ This is a free online event where school students get to meet and interact with scientists. It’s an X Factor-style competition between scientists, where the students are the judges. Students get the chance to ask scientists all the questions they want to, then vote for their favourite scientist to win prize of €500 to communicate their work with the public. You can visit www.imascientist.ie for more details.

Congratulations to Gavin Ivory Whyte, Cillian Bergin and Patrick Hayden who were the Scoil Naomh Lorcáin Math’s Week Winners of the school’s Mangahigh challenge. The winning team in the Math’s Week Table quiz were Aoife Moran Terry, Seth Heslin and Patrick Hayden.

Thank you to all who contributed to the recent used clothes collection at Scoil Naomh Lorcáin, €143 was raised. Along with the money from collections last year we now have enough to purchase a new laptop for the Learning Support/Resource room. Children will benefit greatly from having increased access to online materials and computer based learning activities.

Our children are taking part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox appeal and all completed shoeboxes was collected on Friday the 9th of November to travel to needy children worldwide.
