SALLINS resident and community activist James Lawless has become a member of Fianna Fail’s central ruling body, the Ard Comhairle (national executive). It’s the only election in which the candidates are selected by direct election across the party’s national membership and must draw support from across the country to get elected.

“Competition was tight in this election this year with over 50 candidates seeking votes from 4,000 delegates across the country who were entitled to cast a vote,” said Mr. Lawless.

He exceeded the quota on first preferences and was elected on the first count. A trainee barrister, Mr. Lawless was recently appointed to the Fianna Fail Justice Policy committee. He is also a co-founder and editor of the new party members’ magazine Cuisle. Mr Lawless is also the Leinster Leader’s Sallins notes correspondent.

It is expected he will contest the next Kildare County Council elections, scheduled for 2014.
