NAAS Town Council has come to an agreement with Penneys to allow the public have access to the former Superquinn car park for the Christmas period, writes Paul O’Meara.
It will be open from December 19 (yesterday) until January 6. Users will pay E3 to use it – irrespective of how long they stay.
This charge, Cllr. Seamie Moore told the Leinster Leader, is only intended to cover the cost of security and insurance and he hoped it would bring shoppers into the town.
“The loss of the car park has been regretted since Superquinn was closed,” he said.
North Kildare Chamber welcomed the development which followed lengthy talks between Cllr. Moore, NKC, Naas Town Council and Penneys. The car park will open between 8am and 8pm and will be open on a trial period until early January.
The Chamber hope that this will ease the traffic congestion in Naas and bring more business into the town. Allan Shine CEO of North Kildare Chamber said: “We hope it will help the retail sector in Naas. Car Parking on the main street has always been at a premium and with the extra 80 spaces now available, it is a good news story that is very welcome”.
The future use of the car park will be reviewed early in the new year.
