Changes to Celbridge traffic lights proposed

TRAFFIC movements at a busy junction near Tesco in Celbridge could be improved by 15-20 per cent according to a planning file report at Kildare County Council.
Clarington Properties Ltd, which applied on 7 December to build a “primary health care centre” beside the Famine graveyard on the Maynooth road, says the current configuration of the traffic at the Tesco lights is not working at its best.
The firm wants to build a 3,479sqm medical centre including retail facilities.
The proposed entrance is the current Lidl one. An Bord Pleanala ruled in a previous case that traffic lights would not be necessary there and in pre-planning consultations, Council officials said the Council would be unlikely to condition them.
It has also been recommended that Clarington provide right of way for future development of the site behind it own, and justify the retail element.
A traffic survey of Friday 23 November 2012 found that peak hours at the Tesco junction with the Maynooth road and Willowbrook road were 8-9am and 5-6pm, with the later period having 38 per cent higher traffic volumes.
It found traffic flows 20 per cent higher than a Wednesday survey done in 2010, and attributed the growth to the day rather than overall traffic growth.
Clarington argue that it is unlikely there would be any more than a 100 trips in and out of the centre and that the centre would increased traffic at the junction by only three per cent.
Its traffic advisors say changes to the lights at the junction could improve flows by 15-20 per cent.
