Call for public meeting in Monasterevin
Monasterevin Residents Group will hold a meeting on Tuesday, August 14 at 8 pm in the Day Care Centre to discuss new plans for Monasterevin Main Street.
The residents say they are angry with what has already been done to the street. They have described the work by Kildare County Council as “vandalism”.
“The Main Street was narrowed and a number of crossings put in place. The reason given was that Kildare County Council received money from the Department of Transport to improve access,” Sarah O’Neill from the Group explained.
“Many residents felt the money could have been used on much more needed projects like Drogheda Street where there are four schools, a church and the day care centre.”
She said that residents believe that Kildare County Council have not done half enough for the town. And she referenced a need for paths from new housing estates to schools, crossings on dangerous roads, pot holes and no lighting in vulnerable places.
“We are now asking the people of Monasterevin what they think of the new plan. It will be on display in Super Valu, the library, business places and the parish office.
“We also need to pick our next project to tackle,” she explained. “This town has had enough and wants what every other town gets.
“We think a pavement from Hopkins Havens to the town is essential.
“Also the road off the motorway at Mayfield Cross needs changing immediately before someone is killed.
“Kildare County Council has said the next job for Monasterevin is Drogheda Street,” she pointed out. However she felt that the people of Monasterevin should have a say first.”
Ms. O’Neill called for the council to consult as widely as possible rather than “making the same mistake again by consulting with a select group”.
The committee of MRG had also requested that work not start before the Venice of Ireland Festival, which which is being held this week.
She concluded by urging locals to attend the meeting on Tuesday, August 14 at 8 pm “and together we will get Monasterevin back on the map”.
