White’s Castle, Athy will go under the hammer this morning, Friday, July 6 at an auction in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin.

The property is expected to be sold at a distressed properties auction. It has a knock-down reserve price of just €50,000.

Leinster Leader reporter Lisa Deeney is at the auction this morning - you can follow her updates from the Shelbourne on Twitter at @DeeneyLisa

The castle was sold to local businessman Gabriel Dooley for €1.2 million in 2005, some years after the death of previous owner Sean Doyle.

However, the investment company which held its ownership went into Anglo-Irish Bank-appointed receivership last year.

Mr. Doyle’s son Terry has expressed his hope that the property will be bought by locals.
