BOATING enthusiasts using the Grand Canal at Naas and Sallins are to have facilities improved.

It’s intended to develop a 210 metre long mooring facility in the centre of Sallins village which can accommodate a dozen boats. The timber houseboat mooring facility will have bollards providing electricity and water, along with a 45 metre long short-term mooring facility.

Also in Sallins, car parking bays for 12 vehicles are to be provided as well as a disabled pathway access.

It is also planned to have a sewage pump out facility to the west of the canal road bridge.

In Naas, a new slipway will be built on the Naas-Corbally branch of the canal upstream of Jigginstown Bridge and on the site of the Naas Sports Centre.

Access to this will be via the sports centre road infrastructure with a turning and parking area provided. A 30 metre mooring facility will be built as well as a facilities to bring canoes to the waterway via a 15 metre “canoe step”.

Waterways Ireland has applied for permission for both projects from Kildare County Council and Naas Town Council. If planning permission is forthcoming – as is likely given the councils’ desire to provide amenities for the public – it is envisaged that work will take place between November and March 2013.

A spokesperson for Waterways Ireland told the Leader that the cost of the project was unavailable because the tender process can only commence after planning permission has been received.
