Receivers have been appointed to one of Prosperous’s longest established family businesses, and will save 26 jobs by doing so.

Liam Dowdall and Sean McNamara of Smith and Williamson Freaney were appointed to Finn McCarthy and Son Limited, trading as McCarthy Hardware last Friday, October 19.

And they’ve set tomorrow, Wednesday, October 24 as the deadline for potential interested parties to express
an interest in buying the business.

In a statement issued last week, the receivers said that they plan to run the business as a going concern and sell it over the coming weeks.

McCarthy’s Hardware is a second generation family business that was established in 1964.

A spokesman for the receivers told the Leinster Leader that with a turnover of close to €10 million last year, they believe it is an “attractive business proposition”.

He added yesterday, that there has been “strong interest” in the business by potential buyers.

Although initially based in the centre of the village, in more recent times it moved out to a new larger premises on the Allenwood road, trading for a time under the brand name ‘Space’.

It was founded by Finn McCarthy, but more recently has been run by his son Conleth.

The business has been affected by the general downturn in the economy.
