Quelly family firm faces court action

Case against Newbridge man could fall.

Case against Newbridge man could fall.

The largest food processing enterprise in the county is being prosecuted over alleged emissions into the environment around Naas.

The case concerns the Arrow Group Ltd., effectively an umbrella term for six companies based at the Maudlins Industrial Estate Naas - Dawn Farm Foods, International Meat Ingredients, Simply Soups, Vitner Products, QK Meats and Pasta Concepts.

The enterprise is owned by members of the Queally family, who live in Naas and Waterford.

The Arrow Group faces allegations of causing emissions including odours on dates between February and November 2011.

There is a further allegation of causing noise emissions on dates between April and July 2011.

Solicitor Cairbre Finan told a preliminary court briefing last week that a hearing date would be sought and he believed that the case would be contested by the company.

According to a company representative the case – which could take a day in court – is being contested “on some of the points.”

It is understood that complaints about emissions from people living close to production units, mainly in the highly populated Monread area, will form the basis of any case which proceeds.

The Leader recently reported that during 2010 – the most recent year for which detailed figures are publicly available – there were some 40 “environmental incidents” concerning the site.

These relate to exceeding limits for the discharge of foul sewer, storm water, emissions and noise. On one date in 2010 there were “noise exceedances” at all locations where noise sensitive measurements are recorded.

The company took steps to deal with numerous complaints.
