No Craddockstown Centre support

A bid to provide a community facility to serve the Craddockstown area of Naas ran aground last week.
Cllr. Seamie Moore said the old water tower (close to the former swimming pool site) should be redesigned as a “future district community centre for the Craddockstown district”. He believes the area “has been let down” because Naas Town Council did not hold on to the old swimming pool site (which is now used by the CBS school).
“There is very little for children in the Craddockstown area. I don’t begrudge the sale of the site for school use,” he told a town council meeting last week.
He added: “It wouldn’t take a lot of imagination to have a look at the building and enhance it. The council doesn’t have to come up with the money and the site is available.”
He said one third of the population of Naas lives in Craddockstown, and there is nothing for them except to take a walk around the lakes. Expressing concern, Cllr. Ger Dunne said the boxing club is not in a position to share the premises it uses at that location. He added the boxing club would like to expand and if they have to share the building it would disrupt their activities, not least because of they would have move and store away sports equipment.
Naas Mayor Willie Callaghan took issue with the claim that Craddockstown lacks facilities. He also said if money could be found “it’d be great” but the council cannot encourage people to believe a development will be provided when it most likely will not.
Town Clerk Ken Kavanagh said a redesign and a community centre has not featured to date in the council’s plans.
