Work has started on the construction of a new second level 16 classroom community school at Craddockstown, Naas.

Earthmoving machinery has moved on to the site, opposite the Ban na Greinne residential area and Craddockstown Nursing Home. Some perimeter ditches have been removed and ground work has got underway.

It is expected that the building work will be completed by the end of June next year, allowing for the first intake of students for start of the 2014 academic year next September.

A more permanent facility has been approved for a site at Millennium Park, where a 1,000 pupil school will be constructed.

At that stage students, principally first years, will move to the new school. Ultimately the Craddockstown school, which is designed to have a 60 years lifespan, will house a primary school.

Naas Community College, as it will be known, will be run by the Kildare and Wicklow Education Training Board (formerly the VEC).
