Odlums of Sallins closure marks end of an era

Odlums of Sallins will close today marking almost a century of activity in the village.

The canalside mill provided milled, steamed and kilned oats for the export market, principally the USA and it is understood that this contract will now be fulfilled elsewhere in Ireland.

Currently there are 6 staff members employed at Odlums in Sallins in addition to a contract electrician.

Up to 2009 there were up to 23 people employed there but following the closure of a packaging operation, the numbers employed fell.

The closure of the plant comes as little surprise and was flagged shortly after operations ceased in the packing room.

The remaining staff were initially informed that the plant would close in 2010.
