Food giant Glanbia is looking for a number of voluntary redundancies in their Consumer Products business in Balitore as the company’s dairy brands struggle to compete with high costs and weak consumer demands.
The final figure required by the company is yet to emerge, as according to a company statement, it will depend on “those who avail of the voluntary redundancy programme or relocation and out source job opportunities”.
Glanbia employs almost 2,000 people in Ireland of which over 650 are employed at the Consumer Products business and 150 in Ballitore.
The Consumer Products business includes Avonmore milk, butter, and Kilmeaden cheese.
The redundancies have been described as part of a re-organistion of the business to ensure it remains competitive in the domestic market and the export markets. The news was communicated to employees on September 18 last.
According to Director of Corporate Communications Geraldine Kearney, discussions with employees at the Ballitore plant and their representatives are currently ongoing. Ms Kearney added that significant investment has been made into the Ballitore Consumer Products facility in recent years as part of plans for continued growth at the plant.
“We currently employ 150 people at Ballitore (110 full time) and in the context of the re-organisations communicated to employees last week, Glanbia Consumer Products is seeking to meet these challenges by agreeing new ways of working with the team in Ballitore. Regrettably as part of this process the business will seek voluntary redundancies to determine the number of people interested in this option.”
However the Leinster Leader understands that a meeting was held recently at the plant and staff were informed that between 20 and 30 voluntary redundancies would be sought locally.
In response Ms Kearney said the company could not comment on numbers as it is a matter for individuals and it would be unhelpful to speculate until the process is complete.
