A Newbridge-based fish retailer has thrown its weight behind a new fish labelling scheme.

Nick’s Fish, which has a store on the town’s main street, opposite the Courtyard Shopping Centre, is backing the new Responsible Irish Fish label.

The new label for fish and shellfish has been introduced to ensure Irish fisherman can differentiate their products as 100% Irish in the marketplace, with all products bearing the RIF logo are fully traceable to an Irish vessel. Purchasing an RIF labelled product will help maintain jobs in the Irish fishing fleet and in the Irish seafood processing sector.

The label is only available to processors who source fish from Irish vessels which are part of the Responsible Irish Fish Association, giving consumer’s confidence in the origins of the seafood they are eating and reassuring them that it was caught responsibly.

Said Nicholas Lynch, of Nick’s Fish: “Our family has been involved in the fishing industry for well over a century so you could say fish is in my blood, we have two retail shops in addition to supplying some of Ireland’s best restaurants and hotels. We believe this scheme will protect and develop the fishing industry and Irish Jobs and we know that our customers are keen to buy fresh Irish seafood whenever possible and this scheme will provide them with the quality and assurance they want.”

Speaking on behalf of Responsible Irish Fish Frank Fleming said: “Nick’s Fish have a fantastic record of excellence and a long history of support for the Irish fishing industry. We are delighted that they are working with us to promote Irish caught and Irish-processed seafood at a time when Irish Fishermen are under huge pleasure from imports.”

Nick’s Fish has a processing factory in Meath and also a shop in Ashbourne.
