A Newbridge Town Councillor lent her expertise to an EU conference held recently in Dublin entitled ‘An agenda for new skills and jobs’,

Cllr Fiona O’Loughlin was asked to be one of the keynote speakers as part of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2013 in relation to her insight on rethinking education and its links with employment.

“In every age this essential connection between education and the welfare of the Nation has been identified. ,” said Fiona speaking to the Leinster Leader.

“I recommended that Member States deal with youth unemployment by developing world-class vocational education and training.”

Cllr O’Loughlin highlighted that in times of adversity and crisis, such as what Europe faces now, the power and potential of education has been invoked as an agent of renewal.

“There is a weakness in European education and training systems.

“Matters have been made worse as the economic downturn has led many Member States to cut funding for education and training. Vocational Education and Training must be a valued and integral part of the education system.”
