KILDARE County Council has pledged to tackle the deteriorating condition of busy roads within and on the outskirts of Naas.

Parts of the main street have “dipped” beneath the surface creating an uneven road and potholes have begun to appear along parts of the main road between the Fairgreen and the Dublin Road.

There is an immediate need of for resurfacing work to be done between the entrance to The Gallops at Dublin Road to Murtagh’s Corner and at the junction of South Main Street and Fairgreen.

There are other areas in need of attention according to Cllr. Willie Callaghan, including the stretch of road between the Topaz station at Sallins Road to the main street and from Murtagh’s corner towards the gardai station at Kilcullen Road.

“The main street is in a terrible condition but while Kildare County Council is willing to repair the very bad parts it is unlikely they have access to funds to allow for a through reconstruction job which, ideally, is needed,” said the Naas Mayor.

Part of the reason behind the problem is the delays caused as healthy and safety audits took place in the wake of the death of a county council employee as he worked on a public road near Maynooth last month.

“Council staff are at least a month behind in terms of work that needs to be done and while health and safety issues are important there is a feeling that maybe it is being overdone because the same regulations or delays are not as noticeable in other parts of the country,” said Cllr. Callaghan.

He added: “you can see the roads breaking up around Naas while at the same time others areas like Clane and Newbridge have had had substantial improvement projects completed.”

Kildare County Council has applied for funding to pay for road surface restoration along the main street.

“Routine maintenance and remedial patching will be carried out on an ongoing basis on these roads, subject of budgetary and personnel constraints to keep these roads in a reasonable state of repair,” said KCC official Sonya Kavanagh.
