Naas apartment block tenants parking charge criticised

PEOPLE with cars living at Riverview apartments at New Row, off South Main Street, pay Naas Town Council €30 per year to park.
Visitors to the town proportionately pay much more than that.
“I think it’s a shame we charge people in our own houses. We give them reduced rent and then we charge them for parking outside the houses. No such charges exist in other estates,” Cllr. Seamie Moore told a Naas Town Council meeting.
Cllr. Darren Scully said people living in apartments not owned by the council had to pay fees like the household charge as well as a monthly mortgage.
Town Manager Eamonn O’Sullivan said similar charges exist on Friary Road and Basin Street.
Cllr. Rioghnagh Bracken said people who feel they have a problem paying the charge should seek a waiver.
She added that private apartment dwellers dont have to pay.
Town Clerk Ken Kavanagh was against doing away with the charge.
“I do not recommend the elimination of charges for residents parking permits at Riverview or any other housing scheme,” he said. The council charges €50 for a two year permit and permits for visitors cost €1.50 a day.
