A Kildare man has received the title of IASE (Irish Association of Supported Employment) ‘Employee of the Year’.

Kevin Moran works part-time as a school caretaker at Gael Cholaiste Chill Dara in Naas.

He was presented with an award recently by former presidential candidate Sean Gallagher and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton at the 4th annual IASE National Best Practice in Supported Employment Awards at Dublin’s Mansion House.

These awards pay tribute to individuals and organisations in recognition of their significant contribution in making equal employment opportunities a reality for people with a disability in Ireland.

Kevin was was nominated by his Job Coach Ber Rowan at KARE to recognize him both for his outstanding commitment to his work and on becoming an advocate and champion for Supported Employment to other people with disabilities in his community.

Speaking at the Awards, Minister Burton said: “It gives me great pleasure to share this occasion with exceptional people with disabilities, mentors and organisations who are proving that people with disabilities should have equal opportunity to have a job. I especially want to congratulate all of the finalists for these awards and, of course, the deserving winners who have shown determination and dedication in breaking down barriers to employment for people with disabilities”.

Supported Employment encourages full economic and social participation, where every individual is able to bring his or her unique abilities to the workplace.

If you are an employer new to employing someone with a disability, why not give someone the valuable opportunity to shadow you at work for the day, by taking part in the annual IASE Job Shadow Initiative on the 25th of April. See www.iase.ie or contact 097 82894 for further details.
