K Club wins wine award

The wine cellars at the K Club

Straffan’s K Club was awarded a Gold Medal Award for Wine Experience in the annual Hotel and Catering Review Golf Medal Awards on Tuesday night last, September 25.

Running for more than two decades, the Hotel and Catering Review Gold Medal Awards are recognised as the leading independent awards programme for the Irish hospitality industry.  Judged by hospitality experts with a proven track record in industry operations, the Gold Medal Awards acknowledge the very best that the Irish hospitality industry has to offer.

Straffan House at the K Club has a purpose built cellar which dates back to the 1800’s.

The K Club has a rich wine heritage and the original house itself, Straffan House was built by the Barton Family of the famous Barton & Guestier wines back in 1832. The long tradition and heritage of fine wines is still very much alive today. There are over 450 wines on the list and it reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the winemaking world, like a virtual drive through Bordeaux.

The award winning sommelier, Lisa O’ Doherty, also believes that a truly memorable wine experience is not just about the wine in the glass. “At the K Club we offer a tour of our wine cellar every Saturday. A chance to see the cellars built by the famous Bordeaux Barton family is a remarkable experience and something that really excites our guests”.
