Deadline for Kildare Village appeal looms

Kildare Village

Kildare Village

The company behind Kildare Village has until this Friday November 23 to lodge an appeal against a planning condition, which could put its expansion in jeopardy.

The extension, along with 350 new permanent jobs and 100 construction posts, is under threat after the company said if one of
the planning conditions was not resolved, it may not go ahead.

The county council granted permission for the development on October 26, and if Retail Ireland is to lodge an appeal, it would have to be with An Bord Pleanala within four weeks of that date.

A statement issued by the company welcomed the news after the decision was made.

“However the decision contains a design condition which affects the viability of the scheme which unless resolved may mean that the scheme does not proceed,” it added.

At the time, the company declined to comment as to what design condition it was referring to, or whether it would be lodging an appeal against the condition with An Bord Pleanala.

However, one condition stipulates that units 63 to 69b and a toilet block be omitted from the development and that a separate planning application be lodged with revised plans. It wants that area to be landscaped or fenced off pending permission for that particular section. The council says this is to ensure the development complies with the draft Kildare Town Local Area Plan 2012 to 2018 and to “ensure connectivity into the adjoining lands to the east and north of the site.” However, its assumed the company would prefer to build the entire project at once and not have to build the extension to the Village and omit a block of units, which they would have to add in later.

The expansion plans cater for 34 new units, two restaurants, a new information centre and an extra 409 car parking spaces.
