Co. Kildare’s high mortgage debt
Kildare has the third highest level of mortgaged households.
KILDARE has the third highest level of mortgaged households in the State, an examination of recently released Census figures has shown.
It also indicates a large rise in the number of households with mortgages where there were unemployed at the time of the Census.
There were 578 of these in 2006 but by last year the figures had risen almost fourfold to 2,750, representing over 8% of all mortgaged.
This group rose almost 380% in Kildare compared to 244% for the State as a whole.
Kildare had 70,763 private household at the time of the last Census and 32,476 of these had a mortgage attached to them, according to the Census report, “The Roof Over our Heads, published on August.
Overall there was an increase of 2% in the number of mortgaged households while there was a 6% drop to 25,964 of the number of mortgages held by persons in work.
Overall 46% of all Kildare households have mortgages.
In strict number terms, only Cork county, Dublin city, Fingal and south Dublin had a higher number of mortgage households while percentage wise, only Meath (48%) and Fingal (47%) are higher mortgaged.
The high percentage reflects the rapid growth of counties around Dublin during the construction poem and is relatively high compared to the State average of 35%.
The lowest was Cork city at 21%. South Dublin had 42% and Louth and Wicklow, both 40%.
The figures also show that, separate to the unemployed , the number in another category, those “not in the labour force,” rose 5% to 3,758 in the five years to 2011, almost 12% of the mortgaged.
Relatively speaking, almost 80% of mortgaged households in Kildare, are in jobs, slightly higher than the State figure.
