Appeal failure paves way for 800 Intel jobs

BORD Pleanala has granted planning permission for a major development in Leixlip after an appeal by a local farmers.
The appeals board gave the goahead for a development which includes a gross floor area of 188,000sqm. It is estimated it will provide 800 long term jobs, subject to a decision by Intel Corporation which has not yet been formally announced.
The estimated project, if it goes ahead, will bring over €26m in development levies for Kildare County Council but will require major upgrading of the water and sewerage system.
Intel applied for permission on 26 July 2012 and were granted permission on 15 August 2012. Local farmer, Thomas Reid, appealed.
Mr. Reid, whose land near the plant, appealed. At the moment, the IDA wants to buy it by compulsory purchase order.
Mr. Reid has initiated a High Court case against the CPO.
His planning appeal raised a number of concerns including the risk to health and height of the building nears his house, Hedsor House, which lies between Intel and Carton House Hotel.
He also argued that Intel’s presence has led to the decay of trees from air pollution in the area but the company rejected that, saying it was “unlikely,” according to the 88 page report by the Bord’s inspector, who recommended permission be granted.
The Board and its inspector also rejected Mr. Reid’s argument that the proposed Intel building would be out of scale. Deputy Emmet Stagg has welcomed the appeal decision saying the permission gives Intel Ireland the final piece of the jigsaw in their quest to be selected as one of the three locations to build the next generation of chips.
Intel Ireland told Bord Pleanala there would be 3,500 construction jobs for two years if the plant get the goahead from Intel Corporation. Intel is said to have invested €7.5 billion at its Leixlip Plant since they first set up their base in Leixlip in 1989. Their last major investment was the €1.6bn investment in their Fab 24 plant in 2006.
Deputy Stagg said there are over 4,500 people presently working for Intel in Ireland.
