The new Aldi store in Naas (at Monread Road) is to open on Thursday – with a number of reduced items to entice shoppers.

The store will be Aldi’s second in Naas – in addition to the Newbridge Road outlet – and will compete with the nearby Tesco store.

Shop floor space occupies 990 square metre and there 94 free car park spaces. Aldi now has six stores in Co. Kildare. Aldi also currently operates stores in Celbridge, Kildare Town, Maynooth, and Clane.

A planning decision to allow Aldi to open a store in Monread Naas was controversial.

An Bord Pleanala gave the green light for the new store at the end of 2011 despite the fact that both Kildare County Council and Naas Town Council had previously refused permission for the store.

The decision also ran contrary to the recommendation of the Kenneth Moloney, the ABP planning inspector, who recommended that permission be refused.

KCC rejected the application because of the “restricted size and location of the development.”

NTC turned it down because the location of the store is “peripheral to the main commercial centre of the town and in an area which is adequately serviced by substantial convenience floor space.”

However the APB board felt that while there is a lot of commercial development in the Monread area, this was already envisaged as part of the development plan for the area and the Aldi store would not adversely impact on the “vitality and viability of the town centre of Naas.”
