Avondale celebrate top Leixlip estate award
RESIDENTS of Avondale were celebrating last week after it emerged they had won the prize for the best overall estate in the Leixlip Town Council Tidy Estates award.
Chairperson, Mairead O’Toole accepted the trophy at last week’s awards ceremony in the Springfield Hotel.
A change of flower beds and extra trees were key elements which brought them the prize, said Mairead and secretary, Rita Larkin.
They also created green space where once a public telephone box had stood. Walls were painted.
Mairead and Rita said Kildare County Council had given them the maximum grant with the work and the money collected from residents (€30 per house, €15 per senior citizens or €20 for two senior citizens) was also a factor. “We have very very good residents,” said Mairead.
A crucial element was the volunteer work of Christy Muldoon and John Walsh. Others to chip in with their time included Tony Roche, John O’Toole, Patrick O’Connor, Eamon Farrell and Rita.
Apart from their gardening activities, the Residents Association held a festival day on a gorgeous 18 August aimed at children and grandchildren.
On behalf of the judges, Yvonne O’Connor and HP’s James Caffrey, Ms. O’Connor said it was not easy to maintain estates when landlords did not contribute and tenants did not know one end of a lawnmower from another.
Town Council chairperson, Colm Purcell, speculating as to whether the Town Council would soon no longer be, said it had done wonderful work for the town.
He congratuled Avondale’s John Walsh and Christy Muldoon, in particular for their projects. He urged residents’ associations to get young people involved in projects.
The other Estate awards were: Small Estates: 1. Loughnamona and Oaklawn, jointly. 2. Rockingham. Medium Estate: 1. Leixlip Park. Large Estate: 1. Castletown 2. Glen Easton.
Highly Commended Estate: Ryevale Lawns. Most Improved Estate: Glendale Meadows. Best New Entry: Cluain Dara.
