X Factor star Mary Byrne to perform at Curragh Hospice charity night

Mary Byrne of X-Factor Fame will perform at the next Gina Lavelle Walsh Memorial Fundraiser on Nollaig na mBan, Saturday, January 11, in aid of St Brigid’s Hospice in the Curragh.

Mary will be joined by her eight piece band and backing singer at the Hotel Keadeen, at 8.30pm.

“Every year we think who are we going to get and every year an idea comes into my head and I say thanks Gina,” said Marie Lavelle, organiser and Gina’s sister.

“This year it was Mary Byrne. Gina got breast cancer and she died in 1995 when she was 40, her children were 8 and 12 at the time. Her daughter Gillian is now a solicitor and married to John Scully and they have a boy Jack and her son John is an electrian and he has a daughter Lilly 7 months old with his financee Theresa Kelly.”

Gina used to fundraise for the hospice before she got ill herself.

“She fought it for about four years but it came back. Nowadays everything is better, treatment, results but every family is affected by it. We will have raised well over €70,000 for the Hospice. Every year Gina’s memory is kept alive and all women who have passed on from cancer. We have lost women over the years. It’s a hughely worthwhile cause. Thanks to all the ladies who support us and come every year. We couldn’t do it with out them.”
