A former Newbridge bank manager turned artist has survived a round in the ring with Oylmpic champion Katie Taylor.

Michael Hanrahan, who received a personal thank you letter from the President of Amercia for his work last year, can now add painting the Olympic gold medallist to his long list of professional accoldaes.

He was invited to paint boxing champion Katie Taylor recently at The Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin.

“She was fighting Germany´s two weight champion Maike Klueners,” said Michael, who was the only artist to cover the historical visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Kildare in 2011, .

“The fight was over four rounds and was watchted by over 2,000 spectators. After the fight I was invited into the ring to meet Katie, who won the contest, where she signed the painting before it was presented to fan Shauna Dunne who was picked out of the audience.”

Michael felt he captured her speed, skill and strength during the fight.

“It was a true honour to paint live Ireland’s newest Queen.”

Michael painted President Obama’s visit last summer to the midlands town, Moneygall and was the receipent of a thank you note signed by the President of USA Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

In the letter, President Obama thanked the artist, and former manager at AIB in Newbridge, for his kind and thoughtful gift which he added was “much appreciated”. He referred to the world growing “increasingly interdependent” and said he looked forward to “strengthening the bond” between the two nations.
