A Co Kildare wedding band is basking in new-found international fame after a performance at a wedding in Kenmare recently
The band Harlequin, whose lead singer Shane McGrath is from Kilcullen and now lives in Ballyroe near Athy, were joined on stage by Hollywood actress Michelle Rodriquez (Lost, Fast & Furious, Avatar, Resident Evil and Million Dollar Baby).
Michelle did a fantastic set with the band starting with a duet rendition of ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ with Shane, and then filmed as one of the bridesmaids belted out ‘What’s Up’ by Four Non Blonds. The subsequent video from the night has since gone viral and the band’s twitter account also exploded from 1,100 followers to over 11,500 in just four days.
There has been interest and engagements from a range of countries from Ireland to Venezuela. They’ve been contacted by Audi in Germany and Hello! Magazine. The strangest request so far has been for a Sweet 16 Party in Batton Rouge, Louisiana! “We’ll see how that one pan’s out!” said Shane, who said the band knew it wasn’t going to be a standard wedding. “We got the guest list in advance and knew the venue would be on lock down with security and everything.”
He added, “Michelle had been dancing up front since we started and was really enjoying herself. It was a really high octane night, the dance floor was rocking. One of the bridesmaids asked if Michelle could sing with us, she hopped on stage and that was it, nothing was rehearsed or planned. She’s a lovely singer and a lovely person too. To be honest we’ve performed with about ten A-list celebrities in similar circumstances but didn’t get permission to put up a video.”
“The other members of Harlequin are Paul OKeeffe (bass) and Ross OConnor (keyboard) who both live in Celbridge, Ian McTigue (drums) who lives in Maynooth, and Michael Buckley (saxophone) and David Hockedy (a guitarist from Limerick) who are both living in Dublin.
The actress is a friend of the bride Tanya Meli.
