Kids who packed out the Riverbank Arts Centre in Newbridge last Saturday afternoon, March 31, were treated to a special guest appearance by book character The Gruffalo himself.

The Gruffalo was in town to mark the opening of ‘The Illustrators’, a fantastic exhibition curated by UK Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson which features over 50 original artworks by illustrators Axel Scheffler,Emily Gravett and Nick Sharrat, to name but a few!

Julia Donaldson is the author of over 150 books for children. Besides writing best-selling books with Axel Scheffler including The Gruffalo, The Snail and the Whale and most recently Zog, she has collaborated with many other illustrators over the course of her career.

The exhibition has toured Scotland and Northern Ireland, but the Riverbank is the only venue in the Republic it will visit

The ongoing exhibition is a fantastic chance for kids to come and see the Gruffalo,Zog and Stickman as you have never seem them before alongside many other wonderful pieces created by the artists who have collaborated with Julia over the past two decades on her best-selling picturebooks.

According to Hazel Williams of the Riverbank, the exhibition came about because “in the future we will be keen to focus on more exhibitions for children because of the childrens’ area we have in the arts centre”. Several months’ preparation went into the hosting of the event, which will run until Saturday, April 28.

She paid credit to her “brilliant team here in the Riverbank Arts Centre” in making the staging of the exhibition possible.
