There will be an exhibition of bog oak sculptures by local artist Larry Harney at Millicent Golf Club in Clane this Sunday from 11am to 6pm.
The exhibition coincides with Captain’s Day in the club.
The sculptor, who works from studios on the Dublin Road in Clane, has been working with bog oak for the last 25 years. He first came across the wood, which has been buried in bog for thousands of years, in Foxhall, near Loughrea, where his wife Brid hails from.
“Land was being reclaimed and I become fascinated with this amazing black wood which came to the surface,” he said.
“I work with the natural shapes in the wood in preference to sculpting very definite outlines or figures. There is nothing more uniquely Irish than bog oak.”
The artist’s work is on display in Intel, the K Club and the NYPD, to name but a few.
