What exactly happened behind closed doors on the night of September 29, 2008, when the government guaranteed Ireland’s banks?
Journalist and playwright Colin Murphy believes he has come pretty close to reonstructing the events in the lead-up to that momentous night that condemned the Irish people to decades of debt.
Murphy has dramatised the events surrounding the bank guarantee from documents he unearthed and interviews with those closely involved in the decision making. His play, Guaranteed!, presented by Fishamble, The New Play Company, is on the Riverbank stage next Monday. The dramatisation charts the meetings that happened and the decisions taken in the run-up to the night.
“It’s an obvious idea for a play. It’s so bloody important, so consequential and caused such damage. And the way the bank guarantee happened was like a play - take a group of men, lock them in a room to make a decision,” said Guaranteed! author Colin Murphy.
The play is in the Riverbank on Monday, June 23, with a post-show discussion featuring Murphy, Sarah Carey and Brian Lucey. Time: 8pm, tickets €10.
