LIBRARY open hours in north east Kildare towns have risen 18.3% between 2009 and 2012.

In a report to Celbridge councillors on the Leixlip, Maynooth and Celbridge libraries, Marian Higgins, Acting County Librarian, said the combined opening hours per week in 2012 was 129.5, compared to 109.5 in 2009.

Following a call from Cllr. Colm Purcell for longer opening hours from household charge and property tax money, Ms. Higgins said that “given ongoing limitations around current staffing resources, the Kildare Library and Arts Service have “no immediate plans” to open longer

Between 2009-12, the county budget fell 12.6% to €4,351,150 and the book fund allocation by 32% to €369,000.

Good news is that membership has increase, partly due to a three year membership implemented in 2007, collections, staff commitment and an 84% increase in library programmes.

Cllr. Purcell said staff had done a “fantastic job” but people have been asking about increased hours.
