THE Naas Spiegeltent Festival will not now take place.
Entertainers like Rebecca Storm and The Celtic Tenors were lined up as part of 30 shows in the travelling tent which was to have been erected at Poplar Square next month.
A spiegeltent (Dutch for “Mirror Tent”) is a large travelling tent made with wood and canvas and decorated with mirrors and stained glass.
They were originally built in Belgium in the late 19th century.
The tent was part of the inaugural Naas Fashion and Gourmet Week, which takes place over May 3-12.
Organising committee member Tommy O’Driscoll told the Leader there was not enough time available to set up the tent.
“We didn’t have enough time to do it. We thought everything was in place but it was too much of a rushed job. This is the first year of the festival and whatever we do we will do right.”
All of the planning and health/safety requirements relating to the tent were resolved but by the time this was achieved “we were running out of time.”
The event is being heavily promoted to an audience of millions locally, nationally and abroad and the committee are targeting Dublin residents.
Mr. O’Driscoll said he hoped the event will give business in Naas ”a huge platform.”
Both Dawn Farms and the Kerry Group have provided sponsorship.
Among the events added to the list will be a demonstration by celebrity Derry Clarke on Thursday May 9 in Las Rada, Jolly and Kavanagh’s.
There will be a barbecue and food tasting events as well as a vintage car display at Poplar Square and an art exhibition at the Sallins Road community centre.
