THE Nas na Ri Singers rehearsing for their summer concert which takes place on Friday May 17 in Newbridge College Church at 8 pm.
This follows their success in the Kilkenny Music Festival when they were awarded the Clara Parish Shield for Sacred Music and were runners-up to the Wicklow Male Voice Choir in the Colohan Cup Open Section.
Musical Director, Aine Mulvey has devised a programme of music spanning six centuries of compositions. Excerpts from the works of Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Gluck, Haydn, Elgar and
Schubert feature alongside more contemporary pieces by Rutter, Chilcott, Keen, Sumner –better known as Sting - and Gjeilo, a young Norwegian composer.
The 75 strong vocal ensemble will by accompanied by guest soloists on the evening are Katy Kelly (soprano) and Gemma Ni Bhriain (mezzo-soprano).
Katy Kelly studied at the Boston Conservatory and
also at the Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin where she obtained her MMus in
Performance. She recently qualified as a regional finalist at the Metropolitan Opera New England National Council Awards, USA, and has won many prizes for her singing in Europe, including the
IAWS John McCormack Bursary. She is a regular performer at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, having performed in many concerts with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra.
Mezzo-soprano Gemma Ni Bhriain is fresh from her RDS Rising Stars Music Recital in April, and her parents Mary and
Gerry are both choir members of the choir. Gemma began singing at the age of ten with Aine Mulvey.
She is currently in third year studying for a BA in Music Performance in the RIAM.
Accompanying choir and soloists will be the multi-talente
Charles Marshall on piano and organ.
The MC for the evening will be Naas native Helen Spring.
