THE developer of planned astroturf pitches and a BMX bike track in Naas is to bring the plan to An Bord Pleanala.

Conor Carruthers was denied permission for the development at a former IDA site off Blessington Road, Naas.

Naas Town Council decided that residential properties might be devalued if the plan went ahead and the site is currently zoned for enterprise and employment purposes, rather than for sports recreational use.

Mr. Carruthers told the Leader he was surprised at the decision, adding “I think this would be an amenity for the area; not something that would take away from the amenity value of the area and it would provide an appropriate venue for young people and I don’t understand the level of objections.”

Mr. Carruthers, who lives in Kilteel, said he would hope to employ a minimum of 10 people, perhaps up to 20 and at least half would be full time staff.

“Perhaps somebody has got the wrong idea and they think these are motocross motorbikes but the only noise will be people cheering,” he added.

He said there is a ten metre gap between the site and most of the nearby houses and there are tall evergreen trees in the area.

“This is a high end development and this site will have no other use anytime soon. The need for sports and recreational facilities is in the Naas Town Development Plan and the community will use it.”

Mr Carruthers purchased the four and half acre site subject to planning permission.

However some 20 submissions were received from residents, including Declan Faughnan of The Paddocks Residents Association, Liam Sheridan (Mountain View residents group) and Vera Burke of the Elmwood Residents Association.
