A concerned parent has claimed that a proposal to open Kill National School twenty minutes earlier each day will provide nothing more than a 'babysitting' service.
The mother, who wished to remain nameless, said that the new opening time at 8.50am instead of 9.10am is to facilitate a "handful of students" left in the yard up to one hour before school.

According to the concerned parent, 20 minutes will be sha
ved off her child's school day thanks to the new opening and closing times.

"There has been huge uproar from parents locally. The school is now going to open from 8.50am instead of 9.10am and so the kids are home by 2.30pm instead of 3pm.

"The extra twenty minutes in the morning will be used to correct homework and organise the day ahead but what about the homework of the kids who arrive at the usual time of 9:10am?"

A letter was sent out to parents last Wednesday with the proposed new start and finishing times. "Parents will come out in protest if this goes ahead," she warned.

Principal Tom Cunnane has denied that there is any uproar with the new proposal.

"All that is happening is that times are being brought forward to open at 8:50am," he explained. "Pupils now have to be in the class room by 8.50am. This won't have any effect as far as I can see and I've had very little feedback so far. It is the same length in the school day and the decision has been made by the Board of Management.

"People were coming in too early in the morning and students were left at the school unsupervised. The teachers will be in the class room from 8.50am and the day will officially start at that time and last 5 hours and 40 minutes. It is only a proposal but if it goes ahead it will come into effect after Halloween."
