AN elderly man in Newbridge was robbed of his trousers while he was lying down for a nap in what gardai have called a "very disturbing crime".
A man and a woman entered the elderly man's home at Rowan Terrace last Tuesday between 3pm and 4pm while he was having a lie down. They went directly into his bedroom and lifted his trousers from the end of the bed. According to gardai they made off
with the trousers which had some money in one of the pockets while the man looked on in shock from his bed.

Sergeant Seamus Rothwell of Newbridge Garda Station who described the incident as "very distrubing" said the man was left very shook up.

"They went into his bedroom and took his trousers from the bed post in front of the man who was having a lie down. He was expecting somebody else to call so he got a huge shock. The pair just took the trousers from the end of the bed which contained the money and ran." The woman has been described as being in her twenties. with brown hair and was wearing a leopard skin design leather jacket. The man was described as being in his forties with short brown hair.

Meanwhile, gardai are linking a house robbery and an incident of arson that took place in quick succession at the weekend.

A house at The Oaks estate was robbed on Friday last between 8:30am and 4:30pm. A number of items including a laptop, LG TV, ten gold rings and three chains were stolen. The following morning, Saturday, January 30 at 4am a car parked outside the same house was set on fire in what gardai have said was a "malicious and linked" attack.

"The car of the people whose house was robbed was set alight," said Sgt Rothwell. "This was a malicious attack on a green Audi which was completely destroyed. The family got a real shock when they awoke to a fire outside their own home. There are two strands to this appeal which we believe are connected. What we really need is witnesses."

A man was mugged on Friday, January 29 at 1:10am on Eyre Street in Newbridge. He was walking in the vicinty of the junction of Eyre Street and Georges Street when he was approached by the three men who threatened him and demanded his money. After he handed over his cash he received a cut to his face but did not require medical attention. The men made off towards the river.

A woman brandishing a knife entered the Nook shop on Station Road in Newbridge on Thursday, January 28 at 7:15pm and demanded 60 John Player cigarettes. She was described as a young woman in her early twenties with short to shoulder length dyed hair with a red colour on the sides.
She had a stud in her left cheek and was wearing a short leather jacket.
